I own and love a few earthquake I was ecstatic to test the Powerhead 1-man earthquake. Besides, I immediately needed: snow removal landed in my mailbox. Also, my new puppy needed a fenced yard so it was time to dig some holes.

My test conditions here in North Carolina include an unholy trinity of soil compositions: red clay, rocks and roots. I wonder how my new seismic device would withstand bad conditions.

Due to the superiority of my thinking skills, I believed that the package contained my new mortar and pestle!

The graphics on the packaging show the functionality of the tool and some of its key features. After removing the styrofoam that was protecting the top of the contents, I saw that the tool was tightly folded into a specially shaped foam.

The first thing I do when I get a new device is make sure all the parts are kept in mind. I did not see a user guide, but after submitting the contents, the meeting looked easy.

Without a manual, I did not know the words “fishtail point” or “output shaft”. Anyway, I pushed the ball through the ball hole with two 9/16 inch wrenches, put the closed nut in and tightened.


Thread the ball through the worm gear and gear shaft and tighten the nut at the other end.

After attaching the top shaft, I tightened the fish neck point on the open end of the yacht.


Thread the tip of the fishtail into the open bottom of the snail stem.

Poof! That was it. I thought the company might not have had a user guide because the device was so easy to assemble.

If I’ve contacted Earthquake Customer Service. I have called them before and the customer service representatives are always polite and knowledgeable. Within minutes, I received an electronic copy of the manual. A few days later, a paper guide came to my door.

Create your machine.

I’m not a fan of gas and oil. I do have some two-way tools though, so I keep a 50: 1 gas bottle with a ready-made mixture. 2 strokes of viper oil are recommended (and included). It contains a fuel equalizer that prevents the fuel mixture from clogging with the carburetor.

If you do not have a mixed can, refer to the “recipe” instruction manual for mixing 1, 2 and 5 liters so you can make and mix the perfect amount for your needs.

I filled the small 0.30 liter fuel tank on the spinner about half full. And so it is. The bike was ready to go!


Safety instructions cover about three pages in the manual, but 99% of the rules are fairly simple, eg B. “Do not use the machine barefoot”.

Here are some rules that should be repeated:

  • Wear trousers, a long-sleeved shirt (or jacket), closed toe shoes, earmuffs and no bag that can get caught.
  • The tool is noisy and can be dangerous if not used with caution.
  • As with all gasoline-powered tools, be aware of the dangers of fire, toxic fumes (from burning fuel) and burns from hot engines or rotating parts.
  • Finally, make sure you know what is underground before you start digging. Call the utilities in your area to check for electricity, cables, plumbing, or anything else that could damage you or destroy tools and property.

Start your machine!

Follow the instructions in the manual to start the cold engine.

  • Move the choke lever to the CHOKE position (that is, until the choke lever opens).

  • Locate the pump lamp at the top of the device. Pump it until the lamp is filled with fuel.

Press the base several times until the fuel mixture fills the base.

  • Push the protected ON / OFF switch to the ON position.
  • Take the handlebars firmly, pull the starter rope and slowly pull it out until you feel resistance. From there, tighten the starter row one full turn. Allow the rope to return to its original position until the machine starts. If the device does not start when you pull it for the first time, repeat this until the machine starts. For me, the unit fired on the first tow.
  • After starting the engine, move the choke lever between the CHOKE and RUN locations until the engine noise is low. When the engine has been running at half throttle for one minute without any problems, you get the throttle in full position.
  • To stop the machine, press OFF on the ON / OFF switch. It will kill the engine instantly.

Note: The gas is set for use at a moderate temperature. Neither the motor nor the drill is recommended for drilling holes in ice. In addition, this device lacks the power – and the right drill – to drill through concrete. If this is what you are going to do, try to find a tool rental company that specializes in the desired application.

The eyes run

When the engine is warm and running smoothly with the choke in the RUN position and the parasite you want to dig into, press the throttle.

The speed of the spinner depends on how much you push the throttle. Want more speed? Keep the throttle fully depressed. To slow down, apply a little throttle until you find the right turn.

The fishtail point that hits the bottom first is an average tip! The weight of the device does not seem extreme, but the tip gets into the ground immediately.

The manual states that the carrier works best by picking up thin slices from the floor and encourages the operator to let the weight of the tool do the work. In other words, do not lean like a single breaker in your device.


The clay and rocks in my yard were not dug long. By squeezing the gasoline, the fish head immediately turned to the surface and the snail leaves formed a crater like clay and threw smaller stones out of the hole. Glaciers have laid boulders all over our area. The fragments in my soil can be as big as rocks. The mortar treated the stones in two ways. Small stones were turned up and out of the well when the borehole came under.

Sometimes the rocks shot out with a little force, enough to stick the leg cover the foot.

The other way the drill handled rocks was to move up and down and tie them down. I suspect that the size and shape of some of the stones were swept and thrown into the slope of the drill blade when the blade lifted it further.

In this case, try to balance two needs: release the gas and hold the engine. Releasing the throttle, however, reduces your grip and makes it difficult to hold the engine when it turns and jumps into my hands.

I found that the largest stones had to use an old-fashioned shovel to remove them before proceeding. As soon as the drill hit a large rock, I stopped the machine, picked up the loose soil, and removed the rock with a shovel. Nevertheless, the snail significantly shortened the digging time.


Maybe my soil is more “rooted” than some others, but roots proved to be the challenge of the shed. My roots in particular caused a problem for me, the operator. When the propeller turned at almost 250 rpm, it got stuck in a carrot cross. All of this energy was transferred to the top of the unit, which vibrated violently. Twice the steering wheel turned in my hands, turned my right wrist and caused brightly colored bruises.

My wrist hurt so much that I stopped the other day. But when the bear landed on the roots, it tore apart with ease.


So is exercise dangerous? It’s a power tool. All tools, including hand tools, can be dangerous. Exit. You could hit a carrot, a big rock or even a pipe and get confused.

In one project, I drilled about 20 18-inch holes to create cedar wood between two landscape areas. The engine slowly took over the gas / oil mixture and I never had to stop to refuel. With fingertip control on the throttle speed, I could shoot it off or reset it just to match what the bottom drill bit encountered underground.

In areas with roots, rocks and red clay, the drill worked as well as a drill. It excelled in open areas without roots where I dug holes to plant trees.


The device weighs 37 pounds. It’s hard! It can be a challenge for shorter people or those who do not have sufficient strength in the upper body. Fortunately, weight only works against you when you move tools in, around and away from your work area. When using the cut, the weight will help you keep the tip in place. Let the weight of the snail do the work.

Using the snail puts your body in an awkward position: outstretched arms to grip the steering wheel, legs spread and body slightly back to stay away from the rotating snail. My lower back was complaining. Instead of using the drill to finish the job in one go, I dug about 10 holes at a time to prevent fatigue – and to be safe.

Pros and cons of AUGER earthquake

  • Screw widthThe 8-inch-wide fins worked wonderfully in rootless soils. For areas with large roots, I would rather have a 4-inch option than “dig” a hole. The smaller cassette size along with the weight of the unit could cut and get to the roots easily, allowing the 8-inch fin to do the job.
  • marketingAdvertised as a “1 person snail”, you should change the description to “1 or 2 person snail”. A diagram and a few sentences about how two people can use the tool together would increase the traction of the earthquake table and demonstrate its use for smaller people.

I am used to being good with the tools I already have and I was amazed at how the seismic drill increased my productivity. I pick the snail every time I need to plant something (which is often because I love trees). When I build my fence later in the spring, the seismic drill will soon dig for holes.
